How To - Convert A User Mailbox To A Shared Mailbox in Exchange Online (O365)
You have to love it when Microsoft’s own documentation doesn't work for converting the mailboxes. Don’t worry… I have you covered! I will walk you through the steps, which are really easy.
If you are like me and follow Microsoft's instructions, you will soon realize that the option doesn’t currently exist! Not only does Microsoft not have the correct instructions, but many of their articles include spelling mistakes, and these instructions are no exception.
What do you get when you mix a sheep and a mailbox together?
A Maailbox!
Current Instructions from Microsoft:
Current Instructions: Convert a user mailbox to a shared mailbox
Go Here:
Select the user. On the Mail tab, select Convert to shared mailbox and select Convert.
There is no option to convert the mailbox ANYWHERE.
What do you do? You might think it is a role/PIM issue, but it isn’t.
How To Actually Convert The Mailbox
You will need to go to the:
Make sure you are in the mailboxes section under “Recipients.”
Select the user under “Manage mailboxes”. You should see a small check box in a circle if done correctly.
Click on Convert to Shared Mailbox.
Remove the license
Go into Office 365 Admin and remove the license from the user.
